Task 1. Read and translate the text.
The airplane
The airplane is a heavier-than-air craft. Its principal use is to transport people or things by air. An airplane is of five essential parts-the wings, the fuselage, the power plant, the control surfaces and the landing gear. Each part of the airplane has its function.
The wings are to support the machine in flight. They are on each side of the fuselage. The lift of the wing is the secret of the airplane.
The fuselage is the body of the airplane. Its function is to carry the load. The fuselage of today s airplane is able to take heavy loads.
The power plant is the airplane’s means of propulsion. It is to give power or thrust. The power plant is to give the maximum power for the minimum weight.
The control surfaces are on the wings and tail unit. The purpose of the control surfaces is to control the plane in flight. The landing gear is under the fuselage and the wings of the airplane. The landing gear is to support the airplane on the ground. It is essential for take-off and landings. The landing gear has to be very strong.
Today s airplanes have very high maximum speeds. The speed of sound is not the limit speed today. Today’s airplanes are able to fly at high supersonic speeds. The shape of the airplane is of great importance. The airplane structure has to take large loads. It is to be strong and light. Today’s airplanes are of many types.
