Introduction

   This term paper is dedicated to the study of modern English alphabet, script and orthography. The option of this theme is determined by its relevance. This theme is of current interest for the study of a language because every language begins with alphabet. On a level with it, the knowledge of its script and orthography is significant as well. The ability to write well in English is very important nowadays.

   The object of this work is the main aspects of written system of the language; the subject – peculiarities of Modern English alphabet, script and orthography.

    The objective of the work is to investigate Modern English written system. According to this main issues are as follows:

• to consider the notion of  the written system of the language;




• to examine Modern English alphabet and  trace its development of from ancient times till present days;




• to reveal and study the correlation between letters and phonemes;




• to contemplate Modern English script and its origin;




• to study Modern English orthography and single out the main difficulties of English spelling system;




• to highlight the main principles of English orthography;




• to contemplate English-language spelling reform;




• to detect the differences between American and British English spelling.

   In accordance with the object and issues, this work is divided into 3 chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the English alphabet, its formation and development. Also the correlation between letters and phonemes will be considered there. In the second chapter the English script and its formation is dedicated. The third chapter is consecrated to the English orthography, its main principles. The attempts to simplify English spelling will be considered there. And also the differences between American and British English spelling will be highlighted.
